Coronavirus Food Donations for the Villagers

Due to the present lockdown, on March 10th we gave a rice and oil donation for some of the less fortunate villagers in Sagaing division situated to the west of Mandalay.

Every person who lined up represented either a small group of elderly or debilitated people or a household which has no visible means of support.
Each recipient was given a 61 kilo bag of rice and a 5 gallon jerry-can of oil.
This is calculated to be sufficient enough to take care of four individuals for a period of one month.
Arrangements were made to help deliver these items to their homes.

Since the coronavirus continues to pose an ongoing threat to the entire country’s health and safety, more donations for these remote villagers are being prepared for the upcoming days and weeks.

Earthquake and Tsunami-resistant
Middle School in Rakhine State

This newly completed middle school named Kyawe Thauk Kone is in the village of Gyeiktaw in Rakhine State and is located just over 100 yards from the Andaman sea. In the event of a natural disaster, additional measures were taken in it’s construction in order to bolster it’s strength.

Six foot deep foundations

A surplus of double strength iron rebar was brought in from South Korea to give additional reinforcement to the school’s structure.

100 Schools Celebrates Its Platinum Jubilee

On July 5th, 2019, 100 schools celebrated the completion of its 70th school built since the project was first started in 2005.

The auspicious occasion took place at the opening of the new high school in Htan Pin Kan in Mandalay division. Along with the presence of government ministers and villagers from near and far was also the event’s guest of honor, Dr. Daw San Dar from Mandalay University whose generous personal donation financed the school’s construction.

A good time was had by one and all with the school students providing the entertainment with their spirited performances of traditional Burmese song and dance numbers.

This year the group of volunteers from PACE who are parents of students at the UWCSEA school in Singapore returned once again to the villages of Myanmar to donate their third school in as many years.

The PACE team members include professional librarians who have organized and overseen the installation of state of the art libraries with both Burmese and English language books in two of the village schools.

Recently, ministers from the education department paid a surprise visit to the PACE donated library at one of our high schools in the village of Tetma near Bagan. On leaving, the head education minister told the school staff “We have never seen libraries of this quality before in any of the schools , neither in the urban areas or the villages. More libraries like this are what’s needed if we really want to see the village children of Myanmar get a proper education. ”

THE 100 SCHOOLS

Three School Openings in September and October 18′

September and October have been busy months for school openings. We opened a primary school in Ammarapura in Mandalay division and then went south to Kayah State to open a newly constructed primary and a rebuilt middle school in the Baptist village of War Ban Balo. Later in October the crew began construction on a middle school near Wakema in the Ayerwaddy division and once that is completed we’ll move up to the town of Kyaupadaung near Bagan to build a middle school there.

New Computer Labs

We are now installing computer labs in our middle and upper schools.

In March, Joshua Dennis and Ed Hodge from URBuilding Knowledge in Canada returned once again to build 100 Schools more computer labs.

Since most of the villages have no internet connection which we don’t really need (or want) in the schools anyway, the system we use for teaching in these labs is called ‘internet in a box’.

Internet-in-a-Box is a small, inexpensive device which provides essential Internet resources without any Internet connection. It provides a local copy of half a terabyte of the world’s Free information.

An Internet-in-a-Box provides:

  • *Wikipedia*: Complete Wikipedia in a dozen different languages
  • *Maps*: Zoomable world-wide maps down to street level
  • *E-books*: Over 35 thousand e-books in a variety of languages
  • *Software*: Huge library of Open Source Software, including installable Ubuntu Linux OS with all software package repositories. Includes full source code for study or modification.
  • *Video*: Hundreds of hours of instructional videos
  • *Chat*: Simple instant messaging across the community
